ABOUT

Justin Utley’s music career took off in a big way after being a featured performer at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

In 2005, Justin broke ties with his Mormon roots and relocated to New York City where he became a sought after singer, songwriter, and public speaker, spending much of his music career touring as a performer at official pride events and music festivals worldwide.  With nearly two decades of touring and activism, he has shared the stage with top international acts like Icona Pop, Tegan & Sara, Dan Reynolds (Imagine Dragons), Billy Porter, and Margaret Cho.

In June 2010, Utley released Stand for Something; a single written to inspire and motivate action towards securing LGBTQ marriage equality in the United States. The single was nominated by the LGBT Academy Of Recording Arts for 4 OUTMusic Awards, including Best Songwriter and Artist of the Year, winning Best Country/Folk Song of the Year.

Utley is also known as an outspoken personality against the use of conversion (ex-gay) therapy, a psychological method he endured for two years through his church. He is an inspiring and empowering speaker at colleges and universities across the nation about his experiences, in addition to providing insight on issues of faith in the LGBT community.  He has been a Guest Contributor on CNN’s Faces of Faith Sunday News Segment, Huffington Post, NPR, SiriusXM and MSNBC.

He is a two-time recipient of the “Inspiring Citizen of the Year” award by the FBI’s Diversity Board of New Jersey, "Artist of the Year" by SiriusXM OutQ, the 2021 Impact Award from Equality Utah and 2022 PRISM Award from Roanoke Pride for his work in banning conversion therapy for minors across the United States.

Justin Utley - American Nightmare (Official Video)

“American Nightmare” is Justin Utley’s first single release since his activism work in Utah helped to ban conversion therapy, the discredited practice that aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender expression, in the state. “The win was not only cathartic but rewarding and empowering,” he says. Utah is now the 19th state to ban conversion therapy. Utley plans to take his fight to the other 31 states. “I’ll take my guitar wherever I need to in order to keep this conversation going and get this horrific, shame-based sham of therapy banned. It’s unethical, it’s disproven, and yet so many are caught in its web of lies, inevitable failure, and suicide.” He blames the lawmakers who blindly follow their party lines and church leaders instead of the will of the constituents who elected them. It’s one of the reasons he chose to shoot the music video for “American Nightmare” in a church (incidentally, the same church used for the Touched by An Angel series) and includes scenes with crowds in blindfolds, unable and unwilling to see the disasters that lie ahead. Justin Utley - Waiting For Love (Official Video)

The third single from his new album #SCARS, Justin Utley brings back his Americana Rock flavor and writes about looking for love in all the wrong places.  The opening line "The truth of the matter, no matter how long I've been chasing disaster, it's time that I move on for the next best mistake for my heart to make" is a cycle nearly anyone can relate to. "Its some kind of universal draw," says Utley. "I found myself swiping left and chasing love for the sake of having it, when in reality, it's much better to have yourself, and let love happen, when and if it happens, organically.  Its important to remember that there isn't a 1/2 of you that exists as an empty, loveless void.  You are complete as you are, and there is no rule that you can't be happy and fulfilled being single." Filmed at the historic Sun Trapp, the video introduces another narrative that the songsmith is passionate about. "I wanted to bring to the forefront this Berlin Wall that separates two cultures, as if there's some unwritten law they can't co-exist.  So, instead of pushing an already hard pressed envelope, and having two men or two women kissing in order to create something controversial (and cliche by some standards), I decided to focus on making this more conversational and create a dialogue by colliding these two different universes and show that we can occupy the same space, and have an equally amount of a good time doing so.  Takes an open mind and heart on both sides."
